TRA Celebrates World Telecommunication and Information Society Day

Abu Dhabi, (18.05.2013) - The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) celebrated the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day which takes place annually on May 17th, under this year’s theme: “ICTs and Improving Road Safety”.

The TRA represent the United Arab Emirates in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), which is the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies. The TRA celebration on May 16th coincides with the anniversary of the signing of the International Telegraph convention in 1865 which led to the creation of the ITU.

The celebration included a press conference and an awareness workshop which took place after a video message from Ban Ki-Moon, UN General Secretary and Dr. Hamadoun Touré, ITU Secretary General. Participating in the occasion were Abu Dhabi Police, Emirates Motors Company, representatives of RTA in addition to strategic partners Etisalat, Du and Al Thuraya.

The awareness workshop was titled ‘Usage of ICTs while driving: Safety or Disasters on the road’ committed to the event theme. Director of the organizing department at TRA, Engineer Saif Bin Ghelaita commented “Being a member nation of the ITU, the TRA and UAE we are not unmindful of our role in terms of participation in the standardization and standards development with the ITU. Also, to provide the necessary resource to implement these conditions in the UAE and this is one of the reasons we work closely with the Minister of Interior & RTA across the nation.

ITU spends allot of effort internationally to developed best ICTs Intelligent Transport systems to insure driver safety using a combination of computers, communications, GPS and automation technologies, including radars, collision avoidance systems. they are also working on developing ways to minimise driver distraction from in-car technologies. The authority’s looks into the Union decisions and recommendations with assiduous as it is the way to enhance ICT in the Emirati community toward an international digital knowledge. This comes in line with the leadership vision and the 2021 plan. We are always looking to serve the community that why we acknowledge that road safety is one of the most important concerning cases globally.
