Marking the fortieth anniversary of Ericsson’s first contract in the Sultanate of Oman, the company yesterday hosted a celebratory reception and dinner event for key stakeholders from the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector. Held under the patronage of H.H. Sayyid Taimur Bin As’ad Alsaid, the event shed light on the history of the ICT sector in the Sultanate, and discussed the current ICT evolution and how to bring the Networked Society to life in Oman.

Mr. Anders Lindblad, President of Region Middle East and Africa, Ericsson said: “May 14th marks 40 years of business for Ericsson in Oman, and we are proud of our role in supporting the country to discover the positive impact of ICT on people, businesses and society. Our long presence in Oman spans consistently past our first contract in 1973, and we will always consider Oman an important market to realizing our vision of Networked Society in the region.”

On May 14, 1973, the Ministry of Communication in the Sultanate of Oman signed the first telecom contract in the country with LM Ericsson, Sweden, becoming the first project for the company in the sultanate. Under the agreement Ericsson provided the first National Telephone infrastructure network, establishing telephone facilities throughout Oman, which was considered a milestone at that time.   It consisted of 23 automatic exchanges and a total capacity of 12,000 lines distributed throughout the country.

Abdullah Al Balushi, President Ericsson Oman said: “Oman has a strong track record of providing the best telecommunications services to its people. We at Ericsson are thrilled to be a part of the evolution of ICT in the country, and look forward to further strengthening our relationships with all mobile operators and service providers in the Sultanate.”

Over the past 40 years, Ericsson has provided groundbreaking telecommunications services to Oman, including the first Public Mobile Automatic Telephone System in 1984, and several projects with the country’s different operators.
